Salisbury Chamber Chorus: Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle
Despite its title—“Little Solemn Mass”—Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle is neither particularly little nor entirely solemn. Composed in 1863, more than three decades after his last opera, it stands as one of the most remarkable and unexpected works of his late career. Originally scored for a modest ensemble of two pianos, harmonium, choir, and four soloists, the piece was intended for a private chapel. Its intimate instrumentation reflects the salon setting of its premiere, yet the music itself soars with operatic flair, lyrical beauty, and daring harmonies.
The Salisbury Chamber Chorus is directed by Simon McEnery
