Salisbury Musical Society with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

Salisbury Musical Society will sing:

Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a theme by Tallis;

Paul Carr: Awakening – The Cycle of Hope;

Hubert Parry: Blest Pair of Sirens

Carr’s music is well-known to Radio 3 listeners. Awakening has been specially commissioned by Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and SMS. It is a spiritual choral work, whose setting is based on Stonehenge near Salisbury.

A set of 16 poems written by Stephen Feltham, Awakening portrays the cycle of hope experienced by humanity as it progresses through the celestial cycle exhibited by the equinoxes and solstices. The work is in four main sections: Spring Equinox; Summer Solstice; Autumn Equinox; Winter Solstice, and is appropriately being sung the day after the summer solstice.

A massive combined choir of SMS, The Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and Choristers of Salisbury Cathedral, exceeding 200 singers, will be accompanied by The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and John Findon (tenor soloist).  This is the first collaboration between The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and SMS for many years. The orchestra serves the South and South-West of England, and also has a national and international reputation.

The conductor will be the Cathedral’s Director of Music, David Halls.
