The Farrant Singers

“2023 sees the 400th anniversary of the death of two of our greatest Tudor composers, William Byrd and Thomas Weelkes. We sing two groups of three pieces from each of them, which we have balanced with two groups of three from more contemporary composers, Paul Hindemith and Benjamin Britten. It is also 60 years since the Kennedy assassination and this gives us the opportunity to perform Herbert Howells’ masterpiece Take Him Earth For Cherishing, written in memory of Kennedy shortly after the tragic event. The only other piece in the programme is a setting of a W. B. Yeats poem, in which he tells a past subject of his admiration that she will in time regret not returning his affection – “When You Are Old”.”

FARRANT SINGERS

The Farrant Singers is the longest-established chamber choir in Salisbury, with close links to the medieval city, the surrounding Wiltshire villages and the Cathedral, where the choir occasionally sings the services in place of the Cathedral Choir.
