Salisbury Musical Society: Rutter’s Requiem, Vaughan Williams and Walton
Rutter’s music is popular with choirs and audiences, and his glorious Requiem is no exception. Composed in 1985, the work is reminiscent of the Requiem of Fauré for its simplicity, brevity and rich choral writing. The work is in seven movements, using texts from the Requiem Mass and the Book of Common Prayer. The gloriously pure ‘Pie Jesu’ is a highlight – as is the ‘Requiem Aeternam’, which opens the work. Performed regularly across the world, Rutter’s Requiem thoroughly earns its status as one of the most popular compositions of the last thirty years.
Vaughan Williams composed his Five Mystical Songs for baritone soloist, orchestra and SATB choir in 1911. The songs are settings of George Herbert’s poems, Easter, I Got me Flowers, Love Bade me Welcome, The Call, and Antiphon (Let all the world in every corner sing).
Henry V was the tenth film for which Walton composed incidental music. He had a talent for producing concisely expressive music which reflected the period, atmosphere and action of the film while preserving his own strong musical identity.
