Salisbury Musical Society: Duruflé Requiem, Vaughan Williams Toward the Unknown Region, Stanford Songs of the Sea

Maurice Duruflé published his Requiem in 1948. It is a work written for choir, solo baritone, mezzo-soprano, and organ, with a later revised version written for orchestra with organ. The thematic material is inspired by Gregorian chant.

Toward the Unknown Region was published by Vaughan Williams in 1906. The song is a setting of a poem by the American poet Walt Whitman and it is written for chorus and orchestra.

Songs of the Sea is a cycle of five songs for baritone, male voice chorus, and orchestra, to poems by Henry Newbolt. It was composed by Charles Villiers Stanford, was premiered at the 1904 Leeds Festival.

Chelsea Opera Group will accompany SMS.

The conductor will be the Cathedral’s Director of Music, David Halls.
